Chapter 3


"Captain Kasoul!" Ryoichi and Sumire were looking for the captain. "Where is she?" Sumire, who was Yukiko's lieutenant, asked. "She has to be around here somewhere." Ryoichi said. "What if she's dead?! Captain Ageha was almost dead when we found her!" Sumire cried. "Calm down, Sumire." Ryoichi said. Ryoichi was Captain Isa's lieutenant. They rushed through the woods until they heard fighting in the distance. "It's Captain Kasoul! I'd sense her spiritual pressure anywhere!" Sumire cried. She rushed forward. "Sumire, wait! She's fighting Captain Hanato!" Ryoichi called after her. Sumire didn't listen. She rushed on ahead. She saw them fighting. Yukiko was on the ground, and Teruo was going to finish her off. "No!" Sumire screamed and ran forward. She jumped in front of Yukiko, Teruo's sword digging into her instead of Yukiko. Teruo grinned and pulled out his sword, letting Sumire fall to the ground. "S-Sumire!" Yukiko stammered, her eyes wide in shock. "I've got my victim for now." Teruo said, a smirk on his face. "I need to go now. Until we meet again, Yukiko Kasoul." Teruo and the people in black disappeared. Yukiko gently turned Sumire onto her back. "Sumire! Sumire! Wake up! Please, wake up!" Yukiko cried with tears. Ryoichi appeared beside Yukiko and knelt down. Sumire's eyes were closed, and blood was splattered on her chest. Ryoichi touched her hand, which was cold. "I think she...she's dead..." Ryoichi said softly. "She can't be!" Yukiko whimpered. "Captain...There is no way she could have survived a strike like that. Especially from Captain Hanato." Ryoichi said. Yukiko's tears fell onto Sumire's blood. "She was brave and loyal." were Yukiko's words.

Toshiro stood beside Yukiko as they looked down at Sumire. "She won't be dead as long as we leave her here." Toshiro says. "I hope you're right, Hitsugaya." Yukiko said. "But I can't bear the thought of my lieutenant being dead." Toshiro nodded. "None of us can. I don't know what I would do if Kitsune was dead." he said. "I'm not sure if it was her confidence that kept her alive, or if it was Lieutenant Saito that spared her life." Yukiko looked at him. Toshiro was staring down at the ground with his arms crossed and his eyes narrowed. "Toshiro. You know that Kitsune would never let Yutaka kill her. It was her spirit. Kitsune hates being beaten. We all know that as a fact." Yukiko said with a smile. Toshiro looked up at her. He stared at her for a moment, then chuckled. "I guess you're right." he said. He turned and left the room. Yukiko looked at her lieutenant then left the room as well.

Ryoichi sat down and stared at the sky. Sumire. he thought. How could you have been so stubborn? You know very well you wouldn't have stood a chance against Teruo. He sighed and looked down. "Thinking about Sumire, are we?" a voice said behind him. Ryoichi jumped and looked behind him. "C-Captain!" he said. Kaori Isa was indeed standing behind him. "Yes?" Kaori asked. "Well, I was thinking about Sumire, yes." Ryoichi said. "There's no blaming you. I know you think you could have saved her, but none of us could have saved anyone from Teruo unless someone died or was badly injured." Kaori says. "If you had been the one to have died or been badly injured, how do you think I would feel?" Ryoichi blinked at the captain. "Well, I think you would have been...feeling guilty?" he said uncertainly. "Precisely." Kaori said. "I wouldn't forgive myself for you being injured. Ryoichi, we all feel some guilt in our lives. Even Teruo Hanato, the man believed to have no heart." Ryoichi nodded. "I understand, Captain." he said. "Good. Now go help Squad 7 with training. They've been feeling weak lately." Kaori says. "Yes, sir!" Ryoichi said and dashed off towards Squad 7. "That boy..." Kaori said as he looked after him. "I always sense something different about him."
